Last Sunday, all Christ followers around the world joined in one mind and spirit to remember and honor the resurrection of Jesus. I had the opportunity to share a message live on-line on our church’s facebook page. My title: “What do you have to eat?”
I find it to be very interesting how Jesus fed the four thousand and the five thousand people with a few fish and a handful of bread. However, looking further into what Jesus did I find that Jesus did more than just take what they already had to make a miracle.
Not only did he make a miracle, but he handed the bread specifically to the disciples to hand out. Could he have fed the people himself, absolutely but preferred on both occasions for the disciples to feed the people directly instead.
Several instances, Jesus makes references to the bread of life as something spiritual and more important than a physical meal. Matthew chapter 4 when tempted in the desert. John chapter 4 when passing through Samaria, sitting at Jacobs well.
In John chapter 6, Jesus teaches his disciples, “I am the bread of life” then at the last supper he refers to the bread as his body. He broke the bread just like in the desert and gave it to his disciples as he taught them what it represented.
After the resurrection, Simon and one who accompanied him traveled away from Jerusalem discussing what had happened. Jesus appears to them, but reserves his identity. They discuss some more of the resurrection until they arrived at their destination. They ask Jesus to stay with them that night, not knowing it was the Lord.
They sit at the table and Jesus takes the bread, blesses it, breaks it and hands it to them. At that very moment, they realize it was Jesus with them all along. They recognized him when he broke the bread.
Once they made it back to Jerusalem to tell the others, as they discuss Jesus makes himself present amongst them. After proving to them that it is really him and not a ghost, he asks them, “What do you have to eat?” He eats with them and explains what is to follow.
When Simon and the others go back to fishing, frustrated after not catching a single thing; Jesus appears on the beach. He asks them if they had any fish? Again not knowing its Jesus they followed his instructions and find themselves with more of a catch than they can handle.
They meet Jesus on the beach and to their surprise he is already cooking. He takes the bread and the fish, blesses it, breaks it and again hands it to them.
I strongly believe Jesus asked several times what they had to eat not referencing a meal, but to remind them that they were responsible to preach the gospel to the world. It is why he gave his body, the bread as sacrifice to feed the world. They were responsible to feed the sheep with the word, the bread of life and with the truth of Jesus.
Now, I ask you the question, what do you have to eat? God has placed a gift, a calling upon your life. What have you done with it? People are hungrier than ever for justice and truth. Hungry for change and something new. Who or what have you been feeding? Your ego, your pride? What do you have to eat?
We to have been given the responsibility to inspire others. To motivate and encourage others. Not only with the gospel but with what each of us can do. Use your talents and you’re calling to bring others to Christ. Feed someone who is hungry. What do you have to eat?
Que Tienes de Comer
El domingo pasado, todos los seguidores de Cristo alrededor del mundo se unieron en una sola mente y espíritu para recordar y honrar la resurrección de Jesús. Tuve la oportunidad de compartir un mensaje en vivo en línea en la página de Facebook de nuestra iglesia. Mi título: “¿Qué tienes que comer?”
Me parece muy interesante como Jesús alimentó a las cuatro mil y cinco mil personas con unos pocos peces y un puñado de pan. Sin embargo, mirando más allá de lo que hizo Jesús, descubrí que Jesús hizo más que tomar lo que ya tenían para hacer un milagro.
No solo hizo un milagro, sino que entregó el pan específicamente a los discípulos para que lo repartieran. ¿Podría él haber alimentado a la gente él mismo? Absolutamente, pero prefería en ambas ocasiones que los discípulos alimentaran a la gente directamente en su lugar.
En varios casos, Jesús hace referencia al pan de vida como algo espiritual y más importante que una comida física. Mateo capítulo 4 cuando tentado en el desierto. Juan capítulo 4 cuando pasa por Samaria.
En Juan capítulo 6, Jesús enseña a sus discípulos: “Yo soy el pan de vida”, luego, en la última cena, se refiere al pan como su cuerpo. Partió el pan como en el desierto y se lo dio a sus discípulos mientras les enseñaba lo que representaba. Después de la resurrección, Simón y alguien que lo acompañó viajaron lejos de Jerusalén discutiendo lo que había sucedido. Jesús se les aparece, pero se reserva su identidad. Discuten un poco más sobre la resurrección hasta que llegaron a su destino. Le piden a Jesús que se quede con ellos esa noche, sin saber qué era el Señor.
Se sientan a la mesa y Jesús toma el pan, lo bendice, lo parte y se lo da. En ese mismo momento, se dan cuenta de que fue Jesús con ellos todo el tiempo. Lo reconocieron cuando partió el pan.
Una vez que regresaron a Jerusalén para contarles a los demás, mientras discutían, Jesús se hace presente entre ellos. Después de demostrarles que es realmente él y no un fantasma, les pregunta: “¿Qué tienen que comer?” Come con ellos y explica lo que debe seguir.
Cuando Simon y los demás vuelven a pescar, frustrados después de no haber capturado nada; Jesús aparece en la playa. Él les pregunta si tenían algún pez? Una vez más, sin conocer a Jesús, siguieron sus instrucciones y se encuentran con más problemas de los que pueden manejar.
Se encuentran con Jesús en la playa y para su sorpresa, él ya está cocinando. Toma el pan y el pescado, lo bendice, lo parte y nuevamente se los entrega.
Creo firmemente que Jesús preguntó varias veces qué tenían que comer, no haciendo referencia a una comida, sino para recordarles que eran responsables de predicar el evangelio al mundo. Es por eso que dio su cuerpo, el pan como sacrificio para alimentar al mundo. Eran responsables de alimentar a las ovejas con la palabra, el pan de vida y con la verdad de Jesús.
Ahora, te hago la pregunta, ¿qué tienes que comer? Dios ha puesto un regalo, un llamado a tu vida. ¿Qué has hecho con eso? La gente tiene más hambre que nunca de justicia y verdad. Hambriento de cambio y algo nuevo. ¿A quién o qué has estado alimentando? ¿Tu ego, tu orgullo? ¿Qué es lo que tienes que comer?
Se nos ha dado la responsabilidad de inspirar a otros. Para motivar y alentar a los demás. No solo con el evangelio sino con lo que cada uno de nosotros puede hacer. Usa tus talentos y trae a otros a Cristo. Alimenta a alguien que tiene hambre. ¿Qué es lo que tienes que comer?
